Let me tell you a story about my own post-partum experience of having newborn photos taken.

​

My husband and I booked a maternity session with a photographer that was recommended to us, we didn’t really do too much research. During the maternity photography session I felt there was just something off, I couldn’t really place it, I kind of felt rushed and not calm in the environment and with the photographer. I didn't feel listened to or understood. We knew we wanted newborn photos done too, and again, not really listening to my own feelings, we booked that session with the photographer. It was only afterward that I realized nothing about the newborn photography session was clear to me, there ended up being a lot of miscommunication about what the newborn session included, where it would be, we didn’t sign anything and were never walked through the process of the newborn photography session.

When my baby arrived I ended up having a lot of difficulty with breastfeeding and was suffering from pretty severe post-partum anxiety.

​

We called to postpone the newborn session as I did not feel like I could go into the studio (a home newborn photo session was not an option). What I received back from the newborn photographer was an email full of complaints, threats (she was asking for money, but had not asked for a deposit), and some very mean insults that at that stage of post-partum journey was incredibly hurtful. I cried. I cried a lot.

We didn’t end up having newborn photos taken. I took some, but it’s different when it’s your own.

We ended up going to a different photographer 3 months later and had a wonderful, supportive, and respectfully done baby and parents photo session.

Soon after having a great photo session with my baby at 3 months I realized how important the EXPERIENCE of the maternity and newborn photo session is, and I decided to really hone my photography service experience. I’ve had clients telling me I take beautiful photos, but it was only after I decided to focus on the experience of maternity and newborn photography sessions that I started to get rave reviews.

This has completely revolutionized how I run my maternity, newborn and family photography business.

​

I am transparent, clear, stress open communication, ask for all my clients to read and sign a contract for the sake of both parties, I require a deposit that makes sure you are my ONLY priority on that day and this also allows for me to focus on only YOU and your family.  

​

The only thing that I kept form my own experience with the maternity and newborn photographer is the “maternity and newborn” package deal if booked together. I believe in test-driving your photographer before the newborn session. At the maternity stage you get a good feel for how the photographer functions, the stakes are lower and you’re still yourself and relaxed. This is where we get to know each other and develop a relationship, where we establish an understanding and trust.
